Extremism Rooted in Misinterpreting Islam

President Hassan Rouhani’s special aide on ethnic groups and religious minorities says wrong interpretations of Islam are behind the emergence of extremist groups.
“Unfortunately, two or several (wrong) interpretations of Islam have currently taken shape. One unethical and one violent and inhumane interpretation have emerged that have resulted in the rise of takfiri and extremist groups, such as al Qaeda, Taliban and Daesh (the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant), which create insecurity in the name of Islam,” IRNA quoted Ali Younesi as saying on Saturday.  He pointed to Rouhani’s World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) initiative and said Iran has adopted the policy of fostering unity among Muslims and is pursuing to help establish “anti-violence discourse” in the world.
