Iran’s Ambassador in Baghdad Iraj Masjedi conferred with Iraqi President Fuad Masoum on Sunday and called for broadening bilateral relations. During the meeting, Masoum highlighted that Iran-Iraq relations are strategic and stressed the need for expansion of bilateral cooperation. Masjedi said Tehran has always supported Iraqi integrity and considers this to be to the benefit of all the regional countries. “[To preserve Iraq’s integrity], we are ready to support all Iraqi groups and nation,” he said. The two sides hoped that the two neighboring states would serve as a role model for other Muslim countries by broadening mutual collaboration. Iranian military advisors, upon the invitation of the Baghdad government, helped Iraqi forces retake swathes of the country captured by the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group and ended the reign of IS. Tehran and Baghdad also rejected the results of a secession vote held in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region in September to uphold the territorial integrity of Iraq.
