Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has ordered top military officials to take measures to boost the country's defense power in the face of unabated threats by hostile governments.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the statement in a meeting with senior commanders of the armed forces and participants in the Malek Ashtar Festival in Tehran on Sunday.

The festival is an annual event to honor successful military commanders, personnel, organizations and units.

The Leader referred to the continuous hostility of enemies against the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation, and underlined the need to put up resistance and reinforce defense capabilities to counter hostilities, according to the Leader's official website.

"Today, the armed forces need the best staff in terms of intellectual, scientific and working abilities to maintain the nation's invulnerability in the face of animosities," he said.

The Leader hailed the naming of the festival after Malek Ashtar—a distinguished companion and commander of Imam Ali (PBUH)—and stated that Malek Ashtar was a prominent role model in having "insight and knowing the right path", "strong willpower", "feeling responsible and being ready to act for a cause", "bravery and power of commanding" and at the same time endowed with "spirituality, devotion to God, piety and humbleness".

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that the commanders of the armed forces must follow such characteristics more than any other military personnel.
