Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Saudi Arabia could join peace efforts in the region, if it decides to modify its policies.
“Saudi Arabia tends to sow discord and division, and therefore has not reaped anything but disputes. If they change tack, they can also join the peace process instead of warmongering in the region,” Fars News Agency cited the top diplomat as saying on Sunday.
Zarif made the statements after a trilateral meeting with his Russian and Turkish counterparts Sergey Lavrov and Mevlut Cavusoglu respectively on Syria in the Turkish resort city of Antalya. The discussions were part of the Syria peace talks brokered by the three countries, known as the Astana process.
Talks in the Kazakh capital have produced an agreement on four de-escalation zones across Syria, which has significantly reduced fighting in conflict zones.
“Astana peace process, an 11-month success model, shows that when influential countries cooperate with one another, they can achieve things other could not,” Zarif said.
“When wrong policies are replaced with cooperation, successful results can be achieved,” he concluded.
