The 2017 edition of a conference focused on regional security is scheduled for Dec. 9, its spokesman said.

Speaking in a presser on Tuesday, Jamal Shafiei said the agenda of the one-day confab bringing officials, scholars and academics together is to work out a multilateral security regime for the troubled West Asia, ISNA reported.

“As per the schedule, President Hassan Rouhani will address the opening ceremony and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani will deliver the closing speech,” he said.

Shafiei noted that the interference of outside powers has made the region a scene of utter chaos and “an indigenous security regime” is vital to restore sustainable peace to the region.

“We must put aside differences and get together to discuss common threats and opportunities to improve our security,” he said.

The first edition of the conference was held last December. In the opening speech, Larijani called for creation of a West Asian alliance to foster peace, security and development in the region. Larijani said regional states such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq and Pakistan should replace “attritional rivalries” with a movement toward peace and allocate their huge military spending to develop their economies.
