Ali Akbar Velayati, a foreign policy advisor to the Leader of Islamic Revolution, discussed issues of mutual interests and the latest regional developments in separate meetings with senior Lebanese officials in Beirut.

Following his meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri in Beirut on Friday, Velayati met Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Tasnim News Agency reported.

In comments after his meeting with Berri, Velayati said the speaker was in agreement with Iran’s position that the Syrian city of Raqqah must be taken back from the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.

The SDF recaptured Raqqah from the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group last month.

He also met with President Michel Aoun who said after the meeting that Iran could play an effective role in the return of Syrian refugees to their country, a statement from the presidential palace said.

The two sides discussed the current regional and international situation, as well as military and political developments in Syria and Iraq.

Velayati praised efforts by the Lebanese government to maintain stability in Lebanon, which helped “achieve great victories against terrorist organizations in Lebanon.”

Velayati arrived in Beirut on Thursday to attend the Second International Union of Resistance Scholars Conference.
