Former diplomat Seyyed Hossein Mousavian has commented that the message of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent letter to his counterparts on the latest developments in negotiations between Iran and the major powers on Tehran’s nuclear program is that Iran has “proved its goodwill to reach a comprehensive deal” within the framework of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and that it is the major powers’ “demands beyond the NPT” that has placed an obstacle in the way of striking a final nuclear deal. Mousavian, a former nuclear negotiator (2003-2005), made the remarks in an interview with ISNA published on Thursday. Elsewhere, he said he believes that US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry are earnestly seeking to secure a nuclear accord with Iran and lift sanctions gradually, but the US laws concerning sanctions are “extremely complicated” and the US president is only able to suspend sanctions.
