The UN nuclear chief, Yukiya Amano, will fly to Tehran on Saturday for talks over how to advance the two sides' cooperation on the implementation of Iran's two-year-old nuclear pact with major powers. He will hold meetings with the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, and other high-ranking officials the next day, IRNA reported. The International Atomic Energy Agency, Amano's organization, has been tasked with monitoring the curbs Tehran has accepted on its nuclear program under the deal in return for the easing of international sanctions. IAEA's inspectors have so far verified Tehran's full compliance with the deal's terms. But the hawkish US president, Donald Trump, has disputed those verifications and has been pressuring the UN nuclear watchdog to impose stricter supervision on Tehran's nuclear program, including by inspecting its military sites. This is while Amano has repeatedly stressed that Iran is implementing the agreed restrictions and its nuclear program is under the world's "most robust nuclear verification regime".
