Former US ambassador to the United Nations Thomas Pickering says if US President Barack Obama secures a nuclear deal with Iran, it will strengthen his resolve to find “political solutions” to other Middle East issues.  “If the current policies of the United States on the nuclear talks with Iran and toward Cuba produce positive results, it will strengthen Obama’s resolve to find political solutions to (the issues facing) the Middle East region, including the Syrian crisis and the peace talks (between the Palestinians and Israel),” the veteran diplomat said in an interview with IRNA published on Wednesday.      Obama late last month reset Washington’s policy on Cuba and the two countries swapped prisoners in a historic deal. US officials will visit Havana in January to start talks on normalizing relations, according to Reuters. On the Syrian crisis, Pickering said he believes that the issue can be resolved through adopting diplomatic approaches. In addition, he said finding solutions to foreign policy challenges will certainly boost public confidence in the Obama administration.
