A vice president said US President Donald Trump has missed an opportunity for building “constructive” relationship with Iran, after the hawkish president accused Iran of failing to comply with the 2015 nuclear deal and renewed a threat to withdraw.

“I think Mr. Trump lost an opportunity as a new president to start a new constructive initiative toward Iran,” the vice president for economic affairs, Mohammad Nahavandian, told CNN on Monday.

He was referring to Trump’s Friday speech, where he pushed ahead with his hostile policy by decertifying the Islamic Republic’s compliance with the agreement, formally entitled the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Nahavandian criticized Trump’s remarks for containing “very negative rhetoric against Iran and Iranian people” and reasserted Tehran’s position that the action plan could never be revisited.

“Renegotiation is impossible because … neither Iran nor Europeans, China and Russia would participate in any renegotiation of JCPOA,” he said, naming the powers that helped the previous US administration negotiate the deal with Iran, aimed at curbing its nuclear work in exchange for sanctions relief.

Trump’s decertification decision came despite reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency verifying Iran’s full commitment to JCPOA terms.
