Russia’s Foreign Ministry takes a critical view of US President Donald Trump’s plans to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a terrorist organization.

The ministry said it does not consider IRGC a terrorist organization, Interfax reported on Tuesday, as cited by Reuters.

Trump is expected to announce this week his final decision on how he wants to contain Iran’s regional influence and exact revenge for the failure of US allies, such as Israel and Saudi Arabia, in destabilizing the region through their proxies in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

Iran has helped the regional countries fight extremist forces such as the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi has said, “We hope that the United States does not make this strategic mistake. If they do, Iran’s reaction would be firm, decisive and crushing, and the United States should bear all its consequences.”

Individuals and entities associated with IRGC are already on the US list of foreign terrorist organizations, but the organization as a whole is not.
