Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said Iran has always promoted political discourse between Lebanese political groups.

In talks with the Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam in Beirut on Monday, he said preparing grounds for the political process among Lebanese groups to choose a president is a positive step. "Iran supports political dialogue in Lebanon which will restore stability to the country."

The speaker noted, "Fortunately, Lebanon has been witnessing tranquility during your tenure despite some challenges. Your wisdom has been effective in keeping the situation calm."

On the successes of the Lebanese army in the fight against terrorist groups, he said, "Iran has long been aware that the sponsorship of terror groups by certain regional powers would eventually turn into a great challenge." Referring to bilateral relations, he said, "Iran is keen on promoting economic relations with Lebanon and is prepared to assist the country in diverse fields, including electricity, oil and gas."

The Lebanese premier referred to his country's untiring effort in the battle against terrorists and said, "the anti-terror campaign certainly demands extensive efforts as the takfiri groups abide by no principle and only know how to kill," destroy and damage.

A takfiri is supposedly a Muslim who considers other Muslims to be unbelievers.

Tammam Salam went on to say that terrorist groups are competing in radicalism and extremism "for which the regional nations pay the price."

The Lebanese leader said his nation welcomes Iran's help, adding that "Iran does not belong to a specific political group in Lebanon, and its source of power lies in supporting all Lebanese groups.

Larijani also met with his Lebanese counterpart Nabih Berri on Monday and the two sides discussed the latest developments in the region and issues of mutual interest and concern.

  Potential Against Terror

In talks with Lebanon's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Samir Moqbel on Monday, the visiting Majlis speaker said, "The Lebanese army has a good capacity to tackle terror," ICANA reported.

Larijani referred to the political situation in Lebanon and said, "Dialogue is definitely a good means to reach a political agreement (among the Lebanese political groups)".

Moqbel said the Lebanese army is dedicated and motivated in the fight against terror. "We are hopeful to root out the crisis in the region with the help and collaboration of all countries." Issues of mutual interest and the latest developments in the region were discussed by the two officials.

  Support for Palestinian Resistance

In a press conference at the end of his visit, Larijani described the terrorist groups as a plague in the region and said, "The terrorists have created challenges for Muslims, Christians, and followers of other faiths in the region," ICANA reported.

The MP said Iran is the only country which provides wide-ranging support for the resistant groups. "The issue of Palestine is pivotal for Islamic Republic and that is why we support the resistance groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, not only politically and financially, but militarily."

Referring to the Syria crises, he said, "Since the early days of the  crisis, we emphasized that the problem in that country would only be solved through political means that weapons will not bring democracy". He expressed the hope that the efforts to address the problems in Syria would eventually bear fruit and help improve conditions in the region.

In response to a question on the possibility of some sort of agreement between Iran and the US against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, he said, "Iran and the US have had no agreement. They (the Americans) set up a coalition with no visible result but only (offer) words and statements. We did our part in Iraq, which were reflected in the media".
