Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, who appeared before parliament on Tuesday to defend his ministry's disputed record in overseeing city councils, received an official warning from the lawmakers who were not convinced by his responses. Of the 219 lawmakers who attended Fazli's hearing, 115 considered his answers to be unsatisfactory. IRNA quoted Fazli as arguing that his ministry lacks the mandate to exercise adequate supervision over the performance of city and village councils. "The Interior Ministry does not enjoy legal authority to monitor the councils and municipalities, and what the ministry has been delegated by law is not adequate to meet the demands and expectations," he said. President Hassan Rouhani, who won reelection in the May elections, reappointed Fazli to lead the Interior Ministry during his second four-year term.
