An Iranian envoy to the United Nations reiterated Tehran’s support for the Afghan government’s efforts to establish peace in the impoverished country beset by years of insurgency and foreign intervention.

“We welcome any achievement in the path to Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process, leading to lasting and comprehensive peace in the country and the region,” IRNA quoted Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Es’haq Al-e-Habib as saying in an address to the UN Security Council’s Tuesday meeting on the situation in Afghanistan.

Iran has had close relations with Afghanistan over the years and hosts a large Afghan refugee community for more than 30 years ever since Afghans first fled the Soviet invasion.

The Afghan situation deteriorated following the long Taliban insurgency, the 2001 US-led invasion and rising attacks by the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group over the past few years.
