The Freedom Movement Party announced that Mohammad Tavasoli has been appointed to replace the late leader of the longstanding nationalist and Islamist party, Ebrahim Yazdi, in a statement on Saturday.

Tavasoli is a political activist who served as Tehran mayor in the early years of the Islamic Republic, ISNA reported.

Yazdi died late last month in Izmir, Turkey, where he underwent surgery. He was a prominent figure in the anti-Shah protests before the 1979 Islamic Revolution and was one of the advisors of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, when the latter went into exile to Neauphle-le-Chateau in the Parisian suburb in 1978.

Yazdi became foreign minister in the interim post-revolutionary government of prime minister, Mehdi Bazargan.
