A lawmaker hailed Qatar’s decision to normalize Iran’s ties by returning its ambassador to Tehran, saying the Islamic Republic accepts the diplomatic overtures of its southern neighbor with open arms as it seeks amicable relations with regional countries.

The Qatari envoy, Ali Hamad Alsulaiti, resumed his diplomatic duties in Tehran on Saturday, after a 20-month hiatus that started with Doha pulling its ambassador in an act of solidarity with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia cut Iran’s relations in January 2016 and urged its allies to follow suit, in a push to isolate the country that it claims aspires to dominate the region.

The Qatar’s pivot back toward Tehran ran counter to new demands by Riyadh, which is leading a three-month Arab push to isolate Qatar over its support for the Muslim Brotherhood and its relations with Iran.

Lawmaker Qasem Jasemi, speaking to ICANA on Saturday, said Iran has adopted “wise and logical” policies to maintain calm and long-term stability in the Middle East.

Jasemi hoped that “certain states” will soon learn a lesson from the repercussions of their wrong policies and abandon their “bellicose and illogical” behavior that has stirred tensions in the already volatile region.
