No Decision on UNGA Participation Level

The Iranian government has yet to decide the level of participation in this year's United Nations General Assembly, and it is not clear whether President Hassan Rouhani will attend the annual gathering, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said. "We are still checking out and the final decision has not been made," Zarif told Tasnim News Agency on Saturday. Rouhani, who was reelected in a landslide in May, has attended all the assembly's gatherings of world leaders, known as the General Debate, since his first term began in 2013. According to a preliminary list of speakers posted on the UNGA website, Rouhani is due to deliver a speech during the General Debate on September 20. The UNGA is usually held from September to December or January at the UN headquarters in New York. The 72nd UNGA opens on September 12 and its General Debate convenes on September 19-25.
