President Hassan Rouhani offered his congratulations to the Ukrainian people and government over the Eastern European country's Independence Day. In a message to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Wednesday, Rouhani congratulated the 26th anniversary of Ukraine's independence and expressed hope that Tehran-Kiev relations would develop day by day in line with the interests of the two countries, Tasnim News Agency reported. The president also wished health and success for Poroshenko, and prosperity and glory for the people of the European country. Ukrainians celebrate their country's independence on August 24 that is a public holiday. Prior to 1991, Ukraine was a constituent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. On August 24, 1991, after a failed coup in Moscow, Ukraine declared its independence. About 90% of Ukrainians voted for their country's independence following this declaration on December 1, 1991.
