Russia could convene a meeting with the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany to address concerns regarding the agreement between Iran and the six major powers on Tehran’s nuclear program and urge Washington to avoid sabotaging the deal.

Russian Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the Federation Council’s Foreign Affairs Committee, also told Sputnik on Tuesday, “Russia may demand the ‘six’—thanks to whose efforts this agreement was reached—to convene and to urge the US not to disrupt efforts to stabilize the situation.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in an address to lawmakers earlier in the day that Tehran could leave the nuclear deal “in hours”, if the United States continues expanding sanctions. In July 2015, Iran and the major powers signed the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The nuclear deal stipulated a lifting of economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for Tehran accepting time-bound constraints on its nuclear activities. The plan’s implementation began in January 2016.
