The board of trustees of the Islamic Azad University nominated Farhad Rahbar, former chancellor of Tehran University, as the new head of the largest privately-funded Iranian university. The decision was made in a board meeting on Sunday, Fars News Agency reported. The nominee must be approved by the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution. Rahbar, 58, has also been appointed as acting IAU president, replacing Ali Mohammad Nourian who was managing the university's affairs since April, when former president Hamid Mirzadeh was dismissed by the council. From 2008 to 2014, Rahbar was the chancellor of Tehran University, from which he received his PhD in economics. Rahbar has also served in several high-ranking governmental posts, including as the head of Management and Planning Organization under former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
