Russian Envoy Arrives for Syria Talks

Russian President’s Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev held talks with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani in Tehran on Saturday. The two sides discussed Tehran-Moscow cooperation for the settlement of the lingering Syria crisis within the framework of the Astana talks, ISNA reported.  Iran and Russia are the main allies of the Syrian government in its fight against foreign-backed militants who have been struggling for over six years to topple it. Lavrentiev has led the Russian delegation in the Astana peace talks on Syria, the fifth round of which was held on July 4-5. Iran and Russia, which support the Syrian government, and Turkey, a supporter of militants fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, agreed in the latest round to resume discussions on creating four de-escalation zones in Syria in late August. “During these consultations, the Turkish side said it needed more time in order ... to make an appropriate decision,” Lavrentiev said at the end of the latest Astana talks.
