Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif praised the Iraqi nation for ending the nearly three-year rule of the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group in their second biggest city, Mosul. "Congratulations to brave people and government of Iraq upon liberation of Mosul," Iran's top diplomat tweeted late Sunday. "When Iraqis join hands, [there is] no limits to what they can achieve." Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was in Mosul on Sunday, officially marking the end of an eight-month campaign to liberate the city from what he calls the "state of falsehood". Mosul, the largest city to fall under IS control, was where the group declared its so-called caliphate in 2014. Iran's top security officials, namely Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan, Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani and Chairman of the General Staff of Armed Forces Mohammad Baqeri also sent congratulatory messages to their Iraqi counterparts and commanders of the Popular Mobilization Units. Iran is "ready to provide aid to refugees and those hit by the war and help reconstruct cities and vital infrastructure in the country", Shamkhani wrote.
