The secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) said the attempts by the supporters of terrorists to wage a "war of attrition" in Syria are "doomed to failure."
Ali Shamkhani made the remarks in a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem in Tehran on Tuesday, IRNA reported.
The SNSC secretary described terrorism and extremism as a threat to international peace and security, adding, "The efforts of the regional and non-regional supporters of terrorist groups to wage a war of attrition in Syria are doomed to failure."
He praised the great resistance put up by the Syrian nation and government in the fight against terrorism and extremism and said, "The forces loyal to Syria's independence and the constitution will score more victories through reinforcing convergence and political participation."
Shamkhani continued, "The multinational terrorists who are committing crimes in Syria and Iraq have turned into professional and merciless criminals that pose a greater threat to their own vulnerable and fragile countries than Syria and Iraq."
The security chief referred to the recent Israeli airstrikes against targets in Syria and said, "These sorts of actions are of no use for the growing insecurity in the territories occupied by the Zionist regime," adding, "Arming the West Bank will never allow this inhumane regime to breathe a sigh of relief ever after."
Muallem, for his part, appreciated the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and the Iranian nation and government for their continuous support for the Syrian nation and government in the fight against terrorism and extremism and said, "We are sure that the Syrian nation will succeed in eradicating terrorism in the country through maintaining unity and resistance and with assistance of our friends, such as Iran, Russia and Iraq."
He highlighted the resolve of the Syrian administration in pursuing political dialogue and adopting mechanisms to involve various Syrian groups and said, "The Syrian government is committed to safeguarding independence and the people's votes and believes that putting an end to interventions of foreigners and their affiliated currents is the only solution to the crisis in the country."
