Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived in Tehran on Tuesday at the head of a high-ranking delegation to discuss mutual relations and regional developments.

He was formally received by Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri at the presidential palace. The visit comes amid an unprecedented political crisis in the Persian Gulf, where Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other allies cut ties with Qatar two weeks ago over its ties to Iran and alleged support for terrorism.

Before Tehran, Abadi on Monday was in Riyadh, whose government is at loggerheads with Tehran over various regional conflicts, including the crisis in Syria and Yemen.

Iran's Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi told IRNA on Monday that the trip would open a new phase in two-way relations and help boost economic cooperation between the two neighbors. The envoy said regional developments would also be discussed in Abadi's meetings.

"The Islamic Republic stands by the Iraqi government and nation and supports the brotherly country against security, political and economic challenges."

Kuwait is the last stop of the Iraqi premier in his regional tour.
