JCPOA Panel Evaluates Response to US Senate Move

A top-level committee in charge of monitoring the 2015 nuclear pact, in a "recent" meeting, reached a decision over how to respond to the new sanctions legislation passed by the US Senate, a member of the panel said.
"In a recent meeting of the JCPOA oversight committee, the Senate legislation was thoroughly reviewed and decisions were made about reciprocal measures," Ali Shamkhani was quoted by ISNA as saying on Sunday. JCPOA stands for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the formal name of the 2015 nuclear agreement that offered Iran relief from international sanctions in return for curtailing its atomic energy program.

  Binding Mechanisms
Shamkhani, who is secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, did not provide details on the agreed measures but said, "One of the effective ways to mobilize national resources against the US' hostile moves is to adopt binding legal mechanisms through the Majlis."
The Senate legislation, which passed on a vote of 98-2 on Thursday, still needs to get through the Republican-led House of Representatives and be approved by President Donald Trump to become law. It would slap fresh sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program, arms transfers, support for resistance groups and alleged human rights abuses. It has drawn strong criticism from senior officials in Tehran who see it as a breach of the nuclear deal which calls on the United States to "make best efforts in good faith to sustain the JCPOA and prevent interference with the realization of the full benefit by Iran of the sanctions lifting."
It also commits the US and its European allies to "refrain from any policy specifically intended to directly and adversely affect the normalization of trade and economic relations with Iran inconsistent with their commitments not to undermine the successful implementation of this JCPOA."
