A visiting Iranian diplomat held talks in Kabul with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah on Tuesday on the sidelines of a two-day peace conference dubbed “Kabul Process”. In the meeting with Ghani, Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour said Tehran supports every effort to help promote security in the war-torn country, including the latest peace initiative.Several international organizations and 27 countries took part in the conference aimed at working out a new roadmap for peace and security in Afghanistan, with the support of neighboring countries and the international community. Ghani congratulated the re-election of President Hassan Rouhani and stressed his country’s interest in expanding cooperation with Iran in all areas. The two sides also discussed ways to boost land, rail and sea transport envisaged in a trilateral agreement between Iran, Afghanistan and India.
In May 2016, the Afghan president traveled to Iran to sign the trilateral agreement on the establishment of an international transit corridor via the southern Iranian port city of Chabahar. Rahimpour and Abdullah exchanged views on a range of issues, of bilateral interest and concern.
