The Leader of Islamic Revolution stressed the positive effects of Sacred Defense — the 1980-88 Iraqi-imposed war on Iran — on sustaining the revolutionary spirit and morale in Iran, saying the country, with its steely resolve and trust in God, can now rise to all challenges.

Addressing a gathering of war veterans and commanders, artists, filmmakers, writers and narrators producing works of art about the Sacred Defense, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei Wednesday hailed the efforts to convey the memories of the war to the younger generation by means of art as a "very valuable and significant job", Tasnim News Agency reported.

Aside from financial and human losses during the military hostilities, the Leader said it had major impacts for the present and future, including the protection and strengthening of revolutionary morale resilience of the revolution. Without the Sacred Defense, the "revolutionary morale would definitely be threatened," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

"The Islamic Republic can now claim to [be capable of] rising to all the challenges it is facing, because it has the experience of overcoming numerous obstacles" during the protracted conflict.

  National Asset

Ayatollah Khamenei hailed the memories of the war as a "national asset", and likened the works of art about the Sacred Defense to "cement being pumped into the pillars of the revolution, national identity and country's progress."

The Wednesday meeting came on the anniversary of liberation of Khorramshahr, a city in southwest Iran that was  occupied by Iraq's invading army in the early 1980s.

The oil-rich city was recaptured by the Iranian armed forces on May 24, 1982.

Ayatollah Khamenei has on various occasions emphasized the necessity for appreciating the sacrifices, selflessness, courage and devotion of Iranian combatants during the war years.
