Members of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee held a meeting with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani on Monday.

A wide range of topics, including defense, security and foreign policy, were discussed in the meeting, ISNA reported.

The SNSC chief highlighted the “unique” role of parliament in helping boost national strength and facilitating continuous exchange of information and effective coordination between the organizations which are responsible for protecting national security.

On the nuclear talks between Iran and the major powers, the senior security official said there is a “general consensus” among state officials regarding the extension of the talks, which are meant to safeguard the nuclear rights of the nation and secure the lifting of “cruel” sanctions imposed on the country.

Iran and the major powers have recently decided to extend their negotiations on a final nuclear accord to settle the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear work until the end of next June.

Shamkhani stated, “An agreement which ensures both sides’ interests is possible only through respecting legal rights and accommodating demands (of the parties) in a non-discriminatory way.”

Members of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee elaborated on their concerns regarding issues, such as the necessity to reinforce defense capabilities and beef up security at borders, the nuclear talks, human rights and cooperation with the neighboring states to address regional security threats to meet the long-term interests of the country.
