Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said the scourge of terrorism remains the most serious security threat to the international community.
Shamkhani made the statement in an address to the 8th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues in Russia’s Tver on Wednesday.
The SNSC chief said although the most powerful terrorist organization in modern history, the Islamic State (aka Daesh, ISIS and ISIL), “has fallen into decline” in the past two years and lost many areas under its control in Syria and Iraq, but the “threat posed by terror” syndicates has not diminished.
Shamkhani said the military defeat of terrorists in the Middle East would result only in change of tactics used by them. Rooting out this scourge demands collective cooperation to remove political, social, economic and technological discriminations that create terrorists.
Shamkhani arrived in Moscow on Tuesday to participate in the three-day event, which is focused on global information security and fight against international organized crime.
Presidential aides, ministers and intelligence officials from over 100 countries are among the summit attendees.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the senior official met security officials from other countries, including Secretary of Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev.
