Rouhani Congratulates New S. Korean President

President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Moon Jae-in on his electoral victory to become the 12th president of South Korea.
In a message on Saturday, Rouhani hoped that Moon’s tenure would usher in broader relations between Tehran and Seoul, Tasnim News Agency reported.
The Iranian president wished his counterpart and the South Korean nation success and prosperity. Liberal politician Moon Jae-in was declared the winner in South Korea’s presidential election on May 9, ending nearly a decade of conservative rule. Moon garnered 41% of the votes, comfortably edging conservative Hong Joon-pyo and centrist Ahn Cheol-soo, who gained 24% and 21% of the votes, respectively. The new president succeeds Park Geun-hye who was forced from office in March after being impeached and accused of collecting or demanding $52 million in bribes from Samsung and other big businesses.
