Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei paid a visit to prominent cleric Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi at a Tehran hospital on Saturday. Ayatollah Khamenei was informed of the course of treatment and prayed for Shahroudi's wellbeing, according to the Leader's official website. Born in Iraq, the 69-year-old Ayatollah Shahroudi is mostly known for his 10 years as the judiciary chief, from 1999 to 2009. After serving in the judicial branch, he became one of 12 member of the Guardians Council, a body in charge of checking Majlis legislations in terms of their consistency with the constitution and Islamic law and supervising elections. Ayatollah Shahroudi also holds the post of deputy chairman of the Assembly of Experts, which elects and oversees the activities of the Leader, and is a member of Expediency Council, a body in charge of resolving disputes between the Guardians Council and the legislature.
