The head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee announced on Sunday that Iran and Mexico have signed an agreement on parliamentary cooperation.

In a press conference on the achievements of a recent visit to Mexico by a parliamentary delegation, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who led the lawmakers, told reporters, "The negotiations led to the signing of an agreement on parliamentary affairs and other relations," ICANA reported.

It was agreed that the foreign policy committees in both parliaments hold meetings and consultations in Tehran and Mexico City annually, he said.

He went on to say that the two sides decided to commemorate Iran's Cultural Week in the Mexican capital city next year. It was also agreed that the two countries take measures to prepare the ground for increasing economic and business cooperation.

The lawmaker said the two parliaments pledged to try to promote parliamentary cooperation at regional and international parliamentary gatherings such as the meetings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and regional inter-parliamentary assemblies.

  Mexican Senate's President to Visit  

The chairman of parliament's foreign policy committee referred to Iran's policy on Latin America and the significance Tehran attaches to its relations with Mexico and said, "The president of the Mexican senate will make an official visit to Tehran next year, and in return, Mexican officials have extended an official invitation for the Majlis speaker to visit Mexico."

Boroujerdi said the parliamentary delegation held separate meetings with President of the Senate Miguel Barbosa Huerta, President of the Chamber of Deputies Ricardo Anaya Cortés, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jose Antonio Meade Kuribrena and other officials, including the chairman of the foreign policy committee of the Mexican parliament, the attorney general, the head of Mexico-Iran parliamentary friendship group, in which they discussed economic relations between the two states.

The lawmaker touched on the great capacities and the common grounds for cooperation between the two countries and said, "In this visit, in addition to cultural, business and economic cooperation, talks were held on parliamentary interaction."

He added that the latest political developments, such as the negotiations between Iran and the major powers on Tehran's nuclear program, and regional issues, including the campaign against terrorism, were discussed in the meetings.
