President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his election victory, in a letter published on his website on Monday.

Rouhani expressed optimism for expansion of relations between Iran and France under Macron’s administration.

Rouhani also said Iran is ready to discuss mutual, regional and international issues with the French government.

Earlier on Monday, the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry also welcomed the outcome of the French presidential elections which saw the pro-EU centrist Emmanuel Macron claim a decisive victory and congratulated the government and people of France.

Bahram Qasemi expressed hope that based on grounds established during the past few years and in line with potentials existing between the two countries, Iran-France ties would expand to the benefit of both nations.

Emmanuel Macron was elected French president on Sunday with a business-friendly vision of European integration, defeating Marine Le Pen, a far-right nationalist who threatened to take France out of the European Union.

With virtually all votes counted, Macron had topped 66% against just 34% for Le Pen.
