A lawmaker said the winner of the May 19 presidential election should take domestic economic capacities into account, instead of looking beyond the borders.
"Candidates ought to focus on using the potentials and knowledge of Iranian youths. Looking abroad is not helpful," Hadi Qavami told ICANA on Friday.
He called for the effective exploitation of "domestic capacities that are a prominent feature of powerful political systems".
His comments echoed the recent remarks of the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei who called on the candidates to promote self-sufficiency and avoid reliance on outsiders.
"Candidates should promise to the people during campaigning that they will not look for help outside Iran's borders to develop the country, spur the economy and address problems, and instead focus on national means and capabilities," Ayatollah Khamenei said.
Six hopefuls have been cleared by the Guardians Council, the watchdog tasked with vetting electoral candidates, to run in the presidential race.
Contenders include incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, Ebrahim Raeisi, the custodian of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (PBUH), Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, former culture minister, Mostafa Mirsalim, and former vice president, Mostafa Hashemitaba.
The lawmaker concluded by saying that candidates must have efficient plans and management strategies to lead the country to prosperity.
