Democratic US Representative Adam Schiff on Friday warned US President Donald Trump’s administration against abandoning the Iran nuclear deal.

Schiff said it would be a “grave mistake” to walk away from the deal negotiated by the Barack Obama administration, predicting it would allow Tehran to make strides on its nuclear program, The Hill reported.

The US State Department informed Congress on Tuesday that the US would keep easing sanctions against Iran as the country complies with the nuclear pact reached between Tehran and six global powers in 2015.

Trump has also ordered a full review of the Obama-era agreement, which he has repeatedly criticized as a failure of his predecessor.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has announced that the National Security Council is reviewing the details of the deal.

“[The review] will evaluate whether suspension of sanctions related to Iran pursuant to [the nuclear deal] is vital to the national security interests of the United States,” he said.

Trump said on Thursday that Iran is “not living up to the spirit of the agreement”, adding that he considers the overall accord “terrible”.

“It shouldn’t have been signed,” Trump said. “We are analyzing it very carefully and we will have something to say about it in the not too distant future.”

The Trump administration is obviously seeking pretexts to undermine the nuclear deal Iran signed with five other world powers in order to protect its vested interests in the region.
