Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has expressed hope that Iran and the major powers would reach a final nuclear agreement, saying the settlement of the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program would be beneficial to the region.

“All regional states, including Lebanon, will benefit from a nuclear accord between Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany),” Berri said in a meeting with the advisor to the Majlis speaker on international affairs, Hossein Sheikholeslam, in Beirut on Monday, IRNA reported.

The Lebanese top parliamentarian said terrorism is a danger which threatens all regional and world states and cooperation and solidarity among all countries of the region and the world is necessary to fight the ominous phenomenon.

He also called for expansion of relations and cooperation between Iran and Lebanon, especially between their parliaments, to advance mutual and regional goals.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sheikholeslam said he held fruitful consultations with senior officials of the “friendly nation of Lebanon” during his visit. Sheikholeslam said the Lebanese parliament speaker plays a key role in the Arab world.

Commenting on regional developments, he said, “It is not hidden to anybody that the region is now under much pressure, but by God’s grace, we have been able to gain strategic and decisive victories.

“Over the past several years, plots have been hatched against the Syrian government and nation. Certain power centers, led by the US, France, the UK, and unfortunately, certain kings and heads of a number of regional states do their best to topple the legitimate Syrian government, but they have not yet been able to achieve the objective.”

Since the outset of the crisis, Iran insisted that conditions should be prepared for the Syrian people to take part in a free and transparent election and decide their own fate democratically, he said, adding that fortunately, the election was held as the first step toward democracy. Sheikholeslam also said the Israeli regime encourages terrorism against the Syrian government.

In conclusion, he said Israel has perpetrated genocide and crimes against humanity in Gaza, adding that the Muslim world should step up its campaign against the Zionist regime to help liberate the occupied Palestinian territories.
