US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Thursday he did not suggest to French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault that Washington planned to scrap the Iranian nuclear agreement.

“I didn’t leave any such impression,” Tillerson told reporters before a meeting with Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra, when asked about a report that cited Ayrault as saying the French had the impression that Washington wanted to get rid of the deal, Reuters reported.

Ayrault told reporters after his meeting with Tillerson that there was a clear difference in opinion between the two allies on the Iranian nuclear deal, with the United States wanting to review it from scratch.

US President Donald Trump seems to have backed away from his threats during electoral campaigns to dismantle the historic accord and his administration officials have indicated that they intend to persuade parties to the deal to accept some modifications to the agreement such as stricter policing of its implementation by the UN nuclear agency.
