Tehran's hospitality and assistance to refugees is exemplary, the representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Iran, Sivanka Dhanapala, said.

"I have found Iran's services for refugees admirable and exemplary," Dhanapala said in a meeting with Bushehr Governor General Mustafa Salari in southern Iran on Monday, Fars News Agency reported.

Noting that Iran and Pakistan are hosting the highest number of Afghan refugees, the UN official said, "Iran has provided the best conditions for them in education, living conditions and medical treatment."

Dhanapala had previously said, "The Islamic Republic has been hosting one of the largest urban populations of refugees in the world in the last three decades."

Iran has been a generous host for more than 1 million Afghan refugees for three decades, with little help from the international community.

Tehran has called on the international community to support Iran in hosting the Afghan refugees and facilitating their repatriation.
