Iran Responds in Kind to US Travel Ban

In a statement on Saturday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Iran would ban Americans from entering the country in response to Washington's "offensive" move to temporarily deny Iranians entry to the US.

“The decision of the US government to impose a travel ban on Muslims to the United States, though temporarily for three months, is a clear insult to the Islamic world, especially to the great nation of Iran,” the statement reads.

“Iran will take reciprocal measures in order to safeguard the rights of its citizens until the the insulting restrictions are removed,” the ministry said, adding that Iranian government respects the American people and distinguishes between them and the hostile policies of the US government.

Trump on Friday banned the entry of travelers from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen for at least 90 days, saying his administration needed time to develop more stringent screening processes for refugees, immigrants and visitors.

”The Islamic Republic of Iran will carefully examine and legally pursue any negligence or violation of the international obligations of the United States under bilateral agreements and multilateral arrangements and reserves the right to respond as deemed necessary,” reads the statement.

The ministry has also required all diplomatic and consular missions to prioritize the provision of consular facilities to Iranians who had been prevented from returning to their homes and places of work and study in the United States.
