Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif plans to travel to Switzerland and Malaysia later this week to attend the World Economic Forum and a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation respectively.
The OIC extraordinary ministerial session will convene on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur upon the request of the Malaysian government to discuss the situation of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar. It is meant as a follow-up to previous emergency meetings in New York, Geneva and Brussels in December, ISNA reported on Tuesday. The meeting will discuss steps that the OIC and international community should take to urge the Myanmar government to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Rakhine State, address the root causes of the violence and widen the scope of dialogue among the groups to ensure the return of the displaced Rohingya population to their homes in safety and dignity. The invitation-only annual meeting of the World Economic Forum started in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday and will continue until Jan. 20. It will bring together chief executive officers from its 1,000 member companies, as well as selected politicians, religious leaders and others to discuss international issues.
