A senior diplomat said Tehran’s principled policy is to support Lebanon, calling for stronger unity among Lebanese political factions in the battle against terrorism and Israel’s excessive demands.

Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi made the statements in a meeting with Khalil Hamdan, political director of Lebanon’s Amal Movement, in Tehran on Wednesday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Hamdan praised Iran for its support for the Arab country in the campaign against terrorism and Israel.

“Lebanon’s success in dealing with the threat of terrorism and the Israeli regime owes much to the backing provided by the Islamic Republic,” he said.

The Lebanese official hailed “the age-old relationship” between Iran and Lebanon, as well as close ties between political and religious figures of the two nations.

Heading a delegation of Amal Movement’s presiding board, Hamdan paid a visit to Iran to attend a memorial service for Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the late chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council who passed away in Tehran at the age of 82 on Sunday.
