Unknown gunmen have killed three police personnel early on Wednesday in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan. Jamshid Rakhshani, the governor of the provincial town of Zahak, where the incident took place, said the two police officers and one private were on patrol when armed men ambushed their vehicle, the Mehr news agency reported.

The official did not provide further details on the incident. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident came following a series of terrorist attacks against security forces over the past few months in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, in which a number of police personnel and border guards have lost their lives.

Iran has a 300 kilometer-long stretch of joint border with Pakistan and Iranian officials have repeatedly criticized Islamabad for poor border security and not taking adequate action to prevent terrorist groups from crossing the joint border to launch terrorist operations against Iranian security forces and civilians.
