A senior Navy commander underlined Iran’s self-sufficiency in the production of various types of weapons, missiles and equipment, and announced plans to build an aircraft carrier.

“At present, the Defense Ministry and the Navy are both manufacturing military equipment for naval warfare. The Defense Ministry is producing different types of missiles indigenously and meeting the Navy’s needs to missiles,” Deputy Navy Commander for Coordination Admiral Peyman Jafari Tehrani said on Monday, Fars News Agency reported.

“Building an aircraft carrier is among the goals pursued by the Navy and we hope to attain this objective,” he said.

Two years ago, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari had announced that Iran was capable of developing aircraft carriers and heavy submarines. “As we have managed to produce warships and submarines, we also have the capability to build aircraft carriers and heavy submarines,” he said. Sayyari noted that the process of designing and manufacturing aircraft carriers and heavy submarines could be initiated by high-ranking officials.
