Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi has dismissed a new UN report on human rights in Iran saying the issue should not be politicized.

"The fact is that all countries should move to promote human rights, and we also attach high importance to this issue," he said, adding "But we have repeatedly stated that we are opposed to the politicization of the issue."

"In our view, it is unacceptable to have a politically motivated approach toward the issue of human rights and make decisions based on it," he said on Saturday, IRNA reported.

In his annual report to the General Assembly on human rights in Iran, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has claimed that President Hassan Rouhani's promises of greater freedoms have not resulted in any major improvements regarding human rights and freedom of expression in Iran, Reuters reported.

"President Rouhani has pledged to decrease restrictions on freedom of expression and to ensure security for the press," the report said.

"Unfortunately, those promises have not yet led to significant improvements, and restrictions on freedom of expression continue to affect many areas of life," the report claimed.
