Advanced Indigenous Tank Armor Developed

A military official announced that Iran has built an explosive reactive armor stronger and more advanced than the Kontakt-5 used in T90 tanks. "We have fully attained the capability for producing Kontakt-5 ERA and have even manufactured more advanced versions," the head of Ground Force's Research and Self-Sufficiency Jihad Organization, Masoud Zavarei, said on Saturday, Fars News Agency reported. Noting that Kotakt-5 is used for T90 tanks and employs the technology of the 1990s, he said more advanced ERA is needed now and Iran has developed this technology and product. His remarks came after former commander of Army's Ground Force, Lieutenant General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, said in February that Iran was no longer interested in buying T90 battle tanks from Russia and plans to meet its demand for armored vehicles through domestic production.
