Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi denounced as politically-motivated and spiteful a recent UN General Assembly resolution on the human rights situation in Iran.
“Iran condemns such resolutions, which are adopted against the Islamic Republic in an unrealistic manner and based on the double standards of western governments as well as their spiteful and political approaches,” Qasemi was quoted as saying on Tuesday by Press TV.
“Iran rejects the instrumental and political use of the issue of human rights by western countries against independent states in the world.”
The spokesman emphasized that the Islamic Republic strongly believes that such an approach would have no result other than sacrificing human rights and increasing the world public opinion’s distrust in international human rights mechanisms.
By a vote of 85 to 35 with 63 abstentions, the United Nations General Assembly on Monday approved a resolution criticizing Iran’s human rights record.
Canada was the main sponsor of the resolution, with the United States and the European Union being co-sponsors.
