The deputy foreign minister for consular affairs has traveled to Iraq to discuss the implementation of the agreements between Tehran and Baghdad on the repatriation of convicts and offenders to their countries of origin.
Hassan Qashqavi told IRNA on Sunday that the purpose of the visit was to push for the implementation of legal accords between the two countries, including the agreements on the repatriation of convicts.
He also said Iran and Iraq have agreed to form a joint committee to examine the situation of their prisoners in the two countries to pave the way for their transfer.
He added that most of Iranians imprisoned in Iraq are those people who have illegally entered the country to visit holy shrines due to their lack of knowledge about Iraq’s strict regulations with regard to illegal entry.
