The top Iranian lawmaker praised Russia's "positive" role in the West Asian conflicts and its significant contribution to the anti-terror battle.

Ali Larijani made the statement in a meeting with Valentina Matviyenko, the chairwoman of Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian Parliament.

"Russia is playing a positive role in regional developments and in the fight against terrorism," he said in Tehran on Sunday, ICANA reported.

"The two countries' cooperation can restore peace and security to West Asia."

On bilateral relations, Larijani said the rapidly growing cooperation between the two countries in recent years shows they have many common interests, adding that increased political and parliamentary contacts can accelerate the process for deepening partnership.

Matviyenko said closer Tehran-Moscow collaboration benefits not only the two peoples, but nations in the region, as it is aimed at improving regional peace and security.

The top legislator said parliamentary cooperation is an important component of their mutual relations.

"The two parliaments have a duty to recognize and remove obstacles to increase cooperation," he said.

Heading a high-ranking political and economic delegation, Matviyenko arrived in Tehran on Sunday for an official two-day visit.

The chairman of Russian Federation Council's Defense and Security Committee, Viktor Ozerov, and a number of parliamentary officials are accompanying Matviyenko in her trip.

She was also expected to meet President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Iran and Russia support the Syrian government against an over five-year-old foreign-backed militancy.
