Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met his Nigerien counterpart, Ibrahim Yacoubou, on Monday to explore ways of developing bilateral ties. A high-level delegation was accompanying Yacoubou during his visit to Tehran. During the meeting, Zarif highlighted numerous potential areas for improved cooperation and said Iran and Niger can engage in closer cooperation in various political and economic as well as regional and international domains. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to expand relations and deepen cooperation with Niger," the top diplomat was quoted as saying by IRNA. Zarif said an upcoming meeting of Tehran-Niamey commission would help identify potential opportunities for closer engagement. Yacoubou underscored the Islamic Republic's regional and global role, saying, "We are ready to open the Nigerien Embassy in Tehran and involve in more extensive consultation and talks with Iran." He extended an invitation to Zarif for an official visit to Niger.
