Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Valentin Poriazov said relations between Sofia and Tehran have entered a new phase.

“The new era of relations between Bulgaria and Iran needs enhancing consular cooperation,” Poriazov said in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Consular Affairs Ali Chegini in Sofia on Sunday, Fars News Agency reported.

Poriazov underlined that Iran and Bulgaria have the capacities to boost cooperation in different fields.

In September, a senior Bulgarian member of the European Parliament called for boosting Tehran-Sofia relations.

“Iran and Bulgaria should broaden their cooperation in different fields, especially in the economic and trade spheres,” Maria Gabriel said in a meeting with Iranian Ambassador Abdollah Norouzi in Bulgaria’s capital.

In early July, Iranian and Bulgarian officials signed three cooperation agreements to broaden mutual cooperation in various domains.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Iranian First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov in Tehran.

The cooperation pacts covered such areas as technology, communications, joint investment and industry.
